Losing A Mad Daddy
The obituary reads:
The first time a housemate played the Mad Daddys for me I was stunned by the sound of Freddy's voice. It had a growling, guttural quality that made it sound other than human. The Mad Daddys, of course, couldn't have been more earthy, more trashy or more sweat-soaked. Freddy was the first front man I ever saw strip down to his underwear, stand on a bar and sing about it. His underwear, I mean. The Mad Daddys were fucking funny.
A friend reminded me this morning of the song I'm Gonna Die of Rock N' Roll from The Age of Asparagus. If you never saw a Mad Daddys show, I'm sorry to say you missed out on a decades-long hip-shaking, cocktail-swilling, leopard-print-and-see-through parade of true trash rock genius. Their lust had sincerity. Everybody on the dance floor was in on the joke.
It's sad when the curtain falls but Freddy put on a great, great show.
