ALTROK Ordinals 3
The Sheila Divine - "Where Have My Countrymen Gone."
(Mike says: Anything and everything from this, their latest CD. The Sheila Divine is exactly the kind of band for which alternative rock was made. Atmospheric, angst-ridden rock from Beantown. Few bands serve you their guts on a tin platter anymore.)
Weezer - Green Album
(Just about unanimous - this week's no-brainer.)
The Incredible Moses Leroy - "1983"
(Mike says: I'm jazzed right now about the whole disc by The Incredible Moses Leroy ... which is a guy, not a band -- but he's not named Moses Leroy ... but this song really knocks me out.)
Me First and the Gimme Gimme's - Blow In The Wind (Fat Wreck Chords)
(Rich says: "Can I use this for all my picks?" [He then played me their cover of the Turtles' "Eleanor", set to the tune of "London Calling", over the phone. All of it. -Ed.])
Seedling - Cool Baby, My Hips Go Woo
(Sean says: "You can picture someone swaying to this, wearing hip-huggers. And wearing them well.")
My Vitriol - "Always: Your Way"
(Mike says: Such a great song. Debut single from this British fuzzpop band.)
Ian Hunter - Rant
(Raspe chose this one...)
Kirsty MacColl - "England 2 Columbia 0."
(Mike says: It's so tragic that Kirsty was killed in a boating accident last December, but even more so since her final album, 'Tropical Brainstorm,' proves how much more quality music she had in her. I've been a fan since first hearing her singles 'A New England' and 'He's on the Beach' in '84 or so. Check out the current efforts to have a park bench memorial for Kirsty in London. Email kirstybench@aol.com for more info.)
Go-Go's - Daisy Chain
(Sean says: "Someone tell Roland Orzabal the Go-Go's stole his key change.")
13 Hands - 13 Hands (Cranium Man Entertainment)
(Rich picked this of his own free will.)
Orbit - "Fade Away"
(Mike says: Sorry to double-dip from Boston, but this one, from their latest album 'XLR8R', is another fine track from the band. Quirky but cool.)
Ike Reilly - Salesmen and Racists
(Raspe chose this one, too...)
Webb Brothers - Maroon
(Another pick from Raspe...)
Tindersticks - Can Our Love...
(Rich picked this, and it's got a guy on the cover with a horse...)
Smartbomb - "Breathe"
(Mike says: Unexpected, souped-up cover tunes have become de rigueur for young bands, but a well-done one still warms the cockles of my heart. Faith Hill eat your heart out. Or cockles.)
Alejandro Escovedo - A Man Under The Influence
(...and Raspe picks one again...)
Travis - "Sing"
(Mike says: The new single from the new album 'The Invisible Band.' Why aren't these guys famous yet?)
Action Figure Party
(Rich picks a self-titled song from a self-titled album that's
self-titled.)
The Replacements - "Unsatisfied"
(Mike says: A flashback track. Originally off the seminal 'Let It Be' album. I was sparked to go back (and jam my CD player on 'repeat' while listening to this track) by a pretty decent cover by a band called Scout.)
Bevis Frond - Live at WNYC
(Rich picks this, even though it's his recording of a live broadcast at WNYC, which has dutifully been burned onto a CD for archiving, so you can't have it - you'll just have to buy all their records now.)
